True English Cream Dachshunds Are Rare

Only a few breeders can produce dogs with real British heritage. English Cream breeders tend to charge a hefty fee for the privilege of taking home such an exclusive type of dog—around $4,500 to be more precise.

Solid Black

Listed by the AKC as a non-standard color, a solid black Dachshund is the rarest Dachshund color. This is because the recessive genes that cause it are also incredibly rare. True solid black Dachshunds should be just that—no tan or any other color variation should be present.

Per the World Canine Federation, however, any dachshund that weighs less than 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) and has a chest measurement of 30 centimeters around (11.8 inches) or less is classified as a kaninchen.

Fun-loving personality aside, the Dachshund's popularity makes them one of the more expensive dogs to purchase.

The key factor is that there is no red coloration in true English Cream Dachshunds. All, even very light dogs, that have a red undertone to their coat are in fact Reds, not Creams. IF THE PUPPY'S COAT HAS A RED UNDERTONE, IT IS IN FACT A LIGHT RED DACHSHUND WHICH IS SOMETIMES CALLED AMERICAN CREAM.

The smooth-haired dachshund, the oldest style, may be a cross between the German Shorthaired Pointer, a Pinscher, and a Bracke (a type of bloodhound), or to have been produced by crossing a short Bruno Jura Hound with a pinscher.

Don't buy a second Dachshund if you think it will solve any behavioural problems that your current Dachshund has. It may just make things worse. A paper published in 2020 concluded that aggressors were a mean of 16 months younger and 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) heavier than recipients.

Sometimes a dachshund inherits genes that weakens the colour. The black in black and tan coats changes to a faded grey (blue). In the chocolate, the coat fades out to a very milky 'Galaxy' bar colour, known as Isabella.

Dachshunds will be fully grown before their first birthday. Most Dachshunds pups will reach their adult weight and height around eight months old. They may continue to fill out slightly, but their growth rate will slow down significantly around this time.

The Miniature Dachshund is a mini version of the standard Dachshund, weighing less than 11 pounds and standing just 5 to 6 inches. They have the same build as standard Doxies, with long, muscular bodies and short stubby legs. The Teacup Miniature Dachshund is a separate (and unrecognized) breed from the mini one.

The English Cream lines are often described as the elegant of the breed and there are many dachshunds described as "cream"some are golden, strawberry, blonde, some have black hair mixed with their blond (referred to as "shading", and some have no black at all, which is called "clear".

A dog with two mutant copies of the MFSD12 gene will have an extremely light phaeomelanin that will cause a dog that is e/e at the E locus to have a coat color that is light cream or white.

Despite white being genetically possible in the Dachshund breed, it is not a common occurrence. Therefore, you can expect prices to be higher with these particular dogs.

Shaded creams are born almost black, and over time lose their dark shading but retain some of it on the tips of their ears and tails.
